Spemann Organiser
The Nieuwkoop center expresses Siamois, which is a transcription factor for the gene Goosecoid. Siamois binds to the promoter region for Goosecoid (Fig VI) triggering its expression and thus the formation of the Spemann Organiser. Goosecoid causes the expression of several diffusible molecules, but also regulates its own expression, therefore sustaining the Organiser.
The Organiser has the ability to dorsalize mesoderm and trigger neuralisation of the blastula.
FIG VI: Goosecoid activation.
Organiser derivities and BMP-4 signalling.
As mention in Mesodermal Induction, BMP-4 signalling is present throught out the blastula, until this point due to Organiser (Fig VII). The Organiser starts expressing several BMP antagonist including Noggin, Chordin, Follistatin and Cereberus. This expression of BMP antagonist generates a gradient of BMP activity across the band of mesoderm, allowing different mesodermal cell fates to arise (Fig VIII).
